One of the ways that BFAL supports the arts in the Des Moines County area is through funding of art -related projects created by cultural organizations, civic groups, schools, etc. This is done both on an annual basis with February application forms for Major Projects due and throughout the year at monthly meetings for Special Projects.
Emphasis on project funding is to serve as many youths and adults as possible with educational opportunities in the arts. Some examples of past projects include: artists’ residencies in schools, a printed community calendar of cultural events, a performance by puppeteers, and heritage celebration events. Capital improvement projects have a low priority. Digital photos are requested for all projects funded.
Major Projects
Advance planning for Major grants is recommended so that adequate financial and project information can be submitted. This might include: a budget showing that applicant is also contributing to the activity (applicants should not rely solely on BFAL for funding); information about the artist; example of past similar program, number of people impacted, etc. Please review the Guidelines for Major Projects below and download the application form. Deadline for Major Project applications are due the third Thursday of February.
Special Projects
BFAL Major Projects Guidelines
BFAL Major Projects Application
The Special Projects grant is generally to respond to opportunities
or needs that may arise during the year that need a little boost to be
accomplished. These activities still should meet the same general
project criteria. Special project applications may apply to groups or an
individual’s education and enrichment in the arts. A simple letter of
request should be submitted in advance of the BFAL monthly meeting
during the months of September — May.

BFAL Special Projects Request Example
Since money disbursed annually is raised by the GALA fundraiser, there is a finite amount allocated each year. Major Grants are approved by May. Special Projects are funded throughout the year as long as funds are available.
